Well, we finished week one of a new sport for the kids. Here’s how different life is for girls and boys (well, at least my girl and boys!).
My daughter has, as some of you know, ankle problems and is scheduled for a second surgery in January. She LOVES soccer, which as we all know is horrible on the ankles. This week, she started on crew … rowing. She decided to give up the two months of hockey she would have had before surgery to try this new sport with a close friend.
The boys, as you know, started swimming. I’ve obviously ruined their lives. They are baseball and soccer players. Always both are at the top of their teams. Those sports come easy to them. I wanted them off their ankles (for obvious reasons) for one season, said no to basketball and suggested (strongly) swimming.
So, here’s my week:
Monday: Crew girl – OMG mom. I love it. I can’t feel my legs but I love it! Swimming boys – OMG mom. We hate it. We are never going back. Not tomorrow. Not ever.
Tuesday: Crew girl – OMG mom. Today we had to push 35 pound weights back and forth. I was dying. It’s amazing! Swimming boys – Seriously mom. We hate this. The pool is freezing. We are the LAST of the last. No way. Not going tomorrow.
Wednesday: Crew girl – Mom, they are teaching us about clean eating. Look at the callouses on my hands. I couldn’t breath during training today and I thought I was going to throw up! It was great! Swimming boys – Mom, we both are feeling sick. My hair is getting weird. They want us to swim 30 minutes straight. We can’t even swim down and back without having to stop. We are the worst two swimmers! Please let us quit.
Thursday: Crew girl – Mom, I love soccer but I could see myself, if I can’t play soccer anymore because of my ankle, doing this sport and knowing this is a great alternative. I can’t feel my arms and my abs are killing me. But, it’s so cool!! Swimming boys – Are you kidding me? You are going to make us go every day? That’s crazy. How are we going to get our homework done and I got a leg cramp so bad that I couldn’t even walk. It’s brutal. We want to be done. We’ll take swimming lessons instead.
Friday: Crew girl – OMG Mom. I think the people who I am training with are so great and even though I can’t sit, stand or walk, I am so glad I am doing this! Swimming boys – We are the worst swimmers, Mom, the worst. But we are getting in shape and the varsity guys are pretty nice. So, we guess, we’ll stick it out … but just for this year, Mom. Just for this year.
Ok, guys, I say. Just for this year is fine with me. (smile)
Have a great weekend!
